Tsinghua has been actively contributing to the nation’s poverty alleviation drive. Many Tsinghua alumni and students, exhibiting the spirit of social commitment, have gone to underdeveloped areas across China to serve and help raise local people out of poverty. Every year since May 2013, a team of doctors from the First Hospital of Tsinghua University has gone to Nanjian Yi Autonomous County, Dali Prefecture, Yunnan Province, to perform diagnosis and screening for children with congenital heart disease. After years of exploration and development, the hospital proposed their original one-station service. It has helped to achieve nearly zero burden on sick children from improvers families.

Li Wenhui, Investigator at the National Institute of Biological Sciences, Beijing, and Professor at the Tsinghua Institute of Multidisciplinary Biomedical Research, was selected to be the recipient of the 2021 Baruch S. Blumberg Prize. His discovery of the HBV receptor on hepatocytes was a breakthrough that will have a major influence on the future of therapeutics for people living with chronic HBV infections. “I keep telling my students that the essence of being a scientist is to remain curious, respect nature, and adhere to our true ambition. Ultimately, achieving new academic frontiers is way more valuable than publications,” said Li Wenhui.
